In spite of all the globality, the Internet becomes increasingly local. More and more web search queries are related to the immediate local environment of the user. This is especially true for the Ruhr, an urban area in Germany where people have a strong connection to their region.
The Ruhr area is known for its marked dialect and its coal and steel history. Cities such as Duisburg, Essen, Bochum, Bottrop, Dortmund, and Gelsenkirchen belong to this region. .RUHR gives people, companies, institutions, and associations their own namespace in the World Wide Web. With the introduction of .RUHR, probably as of summer 2013, .RUHR creates an online identity for the entire region.
